Pest control tips

Pests are most active during the summertime when their metabolisms speed up their activity. Prevention is key to dealing with summer pests. It's important to realize that outdoor problems can lead to indoor disasters.

Indoors

• Insure all cracks are sealed from the outside as well as making sure all windows and doors are properly sealed using weather stripping and tight-fitting screens to aid against spiders, cockroaches, and ants.

• Don't leave food out uncovered to prevent flies and the spread of the bacteria they carry. Don't allow pet food to sit overnight indoors or out.

• Check your attic and crawl spaces for proper ventilation and use mesh screens on the ventilation openings to prevent suitable stale environments for insects.

• For termite prevention inside, repair roof and plumbing leaks immediately. Termites may use them to survive above ground in your walls. Also, seal and mend nail holes in walls and cracks in wood floors to rule out entry points for pests.

Outdoors

• River rocks and stepping stones are popular habitats for insects. When using this design element, keep them away from the house and patio.

• Yellow Jackets make nests around and under outdoor furniture such as lawn chairs and tables. Be careful when reaching around these objects to prevent accidental stings. Be aware that noise from lawn and landscaping equipment disturbs yellow jackets and may provoke them into an attack. If you see one using a hole in your house siding or brick, do not block the hole before they leave as this will just force the yellow jacket find another way out.

• Paper wasps may make their nests on gas grills, hose containment, or electrical outlet boxes. Treat with a wasp spray killer and knock down and remove the nest to discard so children and pets may not investigate.

• Keep trash cans away from the home to prevent ants, flies, and cockroaches finding welcome places from their habitat to inside.

• Avoid any plants and tree branches directly touching the house that offer access inside to termites, ants, and spiders.

• Don't allow firewood stored near the home as this is very likely to bring termites into the house as well. If a pest is discovered inside the home, it's time to take action. If a rodent has found an entry point, more have the ability to follow. Because cockroaches thrive in the dark of the night, for every one seen, a hundred probably exists.

Termites are usually a mild nuisance, but if not discovered early on, they can be quite destructive on your property. It's important to regularly look over your property seeking any first warning signs, such as sandy colored termite droppings and their broken insect wings, small entry points around or inside the home for rodents, and scouting ants. If any of these are found, it's time to call A&S Pest Control and  review the preventative measures as stated above.
